Exploring the roots of Heavy Metal music in the Black Country, the featured artists, including Matius Faldbakken, Ben Venom, Harminder Judge, Seldon Hunt and Amy Sarkisian, use typography, vintage t-shirts, sculpture and sound to explore the varying aesthetic features of Heavy Metal and its relationship to contemporary art. The artists, both national and international, take inspiration from the genre, whilst exploring notions of fantasy, chaos, performance and musical devotion.

‘You Should Be Living’ references the title track from the debut Napalm Death record ‘Scum’ and, thirty years after the formation of the band, a special collaborative piece has been commissioned for this exhibition. French artist and Grindcore fanatic Damien Deroubaix and Napalm Death founder Nicholas Bullen will present their sculptural construction containing text and abstractions, embedded video monitors, audio cables and microphones, referencing the work of both artists and the ‘Scum’ album.

The exhibition is part of the Home of Metal festival of music and arts events devoted to celebrating the Black Country region as the home of Heavy Metal music.

The Backers Foundation and Arts Initiative Tokyo are delighted to announce the 5th Backers and AIT Residence(BAR) programme exhibition, "The BAR vol. 5: Rounds" which was held between May 28th and June 11th at Hiromiyoshii Roppongi. New works by two emerging Indonesian artists selected this year: Syagini Ratna Wulan and Duto Hardono were shown.

Syagini Ratna Wulan uses furniture and everyday utensils to create art in a variety of different media including painting and installation. For this exhibition Syagini Ratna Wulan has made new works looking into issues of dream and reality, using old furniture, cushions and typewriters that she found during her residency in Tokyo. Her works are shown as a series of photographs, drawings and installation.

Duto Hardono works mainly in sound, performance, drawing and collage. His works specifically utilize the subtle and sometimes distressing tensions which emerge from using found or readymade objects such as old cassette tapes, records, and instruments. For this exhibition Hardono has used cassette tapes to transmit his recordings of the city of Tokyo randomly, also showing various collage works made up from items he picked up during the residency. Hardono will perform at the opening using a vintage synthesizer, which he recently found in Tokyo.

Both artists have spent the past two months in Tokyo, coming across unfamiliar objects and situations, giving them new meanings and possibilities by dissolving their histories and adding new dimensions to them. We can say that Syagini Ratna Wulan and Hardono are representative of a younger generation of Indonesian artists who are just as comfortable working within their local contexts as within broader global ones.

They will be releasing a hand numbered 1/100 version of the album, complete with full screen printed artwork not available on the general release. Melbourne duo experimental band DEAD makes their first trip to Jakarta last week. They are Jem (drums) and Jace (bass) which both also play together in Fangs of… who are even less popular than DEAD. Jem is also in a band called Fire Witch and run his own label WeEmptyRooms. They also bring a solo project called Onion from Adelaide's multi insrumentalist artist, Lara Soulio, as one of their opening act. They were totally awesome!!!

The first release consists solely of t-shirts and tank tops with emphasis on a tailored fit, soft washed fabric, and a woven range of graphics and hand drawn illustrations. The Radio Dept. was formed in 2001 by Johan Duncanson and Martin Carlberg. The name was stolen from an art pop band Johan had had with a couple of highschool friends during the later part of the 90s. (A little later bass player Lisa Carlberg and drummer Per Blomgren joined the band as they started rehearsing in the way bands so often do.) In 2002 swedish music magazine Sonic drew attention to the band as the song Why Won’t You Talk About It was featured on their accompanying CD-sampler, which was also how Labrador discovered the band. After having released a 7” on their own label Slottet, the debut four track ep “Against The Tide”, they were signed to Labrador.

The Radio Dept.’s debut album "Lesser Matters", was released in the spring of 2003 and by then keyboard player Daniel Tjäder had joined the band. The album became an underground success both in Sweden and internationally. The buzz that slowly grew to give the band worldwide recognition came with a little help from XL.

The second album, "Pet grief", was released in the spring of 2006 and showed a slightly more dreamy, less noisy, side of the band. The album reached #11 in the Swedish charts and continued to give The Radio Dept. new listeners all over the world. Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette (2006), which featured three songs, Keen on Boys, Pulling Our Weight and I Don't Like It Like This also helped spreading the word.

In late 2006 the band started recording what was to become the album Clinging to a scheme. Well over a hundred songs were recorded.

Finally Clinging To A Scheme surfaced in spring 2010, on which the band has combined the most unequalled components from their previous output. Humbly and honestly, most reviewers were thrilled. First single Heaven’s On Fire is a passionate and yet passively aggressive attack on this unknown “you” in an almost cheerful song with a baggy hiphop-beat, obstinate guitars and a driving house-piano. Upcoming single Never Follow Suit has got Johan Duncanson’s hushed voice glued to a heavy bass, backbeat piano and shimmering flutes. A low-key but intense soliloquy on issues of belonging and not belonging.

"Passive aggressive: Singles 2002-2010" - a compilation with 28 songs that collect all single A-sides on disc one and a large part of the B-sides on disc two was released on January 25, 2011.

During the spring of 2011 they will be touring various parts of the world and start recording new songs. Who knows when any of them will be released, but as far as we know they are on to something. They are still clinging to a scheme.
