Exploring the roots of Heavy Metal music in the Black Country, the featured artists, including Matius Faldbakken, Ben Venom, Harminder Judge, Seldon Hunt and Amy Sarkisian, use typography, vintage t-shirts, sculpture and sound to explore the varying aesthetic features of Heavy Metal and its relationship to contemporary art. The artists, both national and international, take inspiration from the genre, whilst exploring notions of fantasy, chaos, performance and musical devotion.

‘You Should Be Living’ references the title track from the debut Napalm Death record ‘Scum’ and, thirty years after the formation of the band, a special collaborative piece has been commissioned for this exhibition. French artist and Grindcore fanatic Damien Deroubaix and Napalm Death founder Nicholas Bullen will present their sculptural construction containing text and abstractions, embedded video monitors, audio cables and microphones, referencing the work of both artists and the ‘Scum’ album.

The exhibition is part of the Home of Metal festival of music and arts events devoted to celebrating the Black Country region as the home of Heavy Metal music.

The BAR Vol.5 Exhibition "Rounds"

The Backers Foundation and Arts Initiative Tokyo are delighted to announce the 5th Backers and AIT Residence(BAR) programme exhibition, "The BAR vol. 5: Rounds" which was held between May 28th and June 11th at Hiromiyoshii Roppongi. New works by two emerging Indonesian artists selected this year: Syagini Ratna Wulan and Duto Hardono were shown.

Syagini Ratna Wulan uses furniture and everyday utensils to create art in a variety of different media including painting and installation. For this exhibition Syagini Ratna Wulan has made new works looking into issues of dream and reality, using old furniture, cushions and typewriters that she found during her residency in Tokyo. Her works are shown as a series of photographs, drawings and installation.

Duto Hardono works mainly in sound, performance, drawing and collage. His works specifically utilize the subtle and sometimes distressing tensions which emerge from using found or readymade objects such as old cassette tapes, records, and instruments. For this exhibition Hardono has used cassette tapes to transmit his recordings of the city of Tokyo randomly, also showing various collage works made up from items he picked up during the residency. Hardono will perform at the opening using a vintage synthesizer, which he recently found in Tokyo.

Both artists have spent the past two months in Tokyo, coming across unfamiliar objects and situations, giving them new meanings and possibilities by dissolving their histories and adding new dimensions to them. We can say that Syagini Ratna Wulan and Hardono are representative of a younger generation of Indonesian artists who are just as comfortable working within their local contexts as within broader global ones.

CVLT NATION is an online magazine focused on the darker side of life. They cover music, art, fashion or film that relates to the heavy metal or punk rock subcultures. Their bloggers come from all around the world, and help to bring a global perspective to the CVLT community.

Noblesse Oblige

OHWOW inaugurates its Los Angeles gallery with a solo exhibition of recent work by New York based artist Scott Campbell. In Campbell’s West Coast debut, Noblesse Oblige, he uses copper, currency, graphite, ink, and neon, to transform tattoo subculture iconography into delicate and tempered work.

Campbell expands his use of cut currency, sourcing uncut sheets of dollars directly from the United States Mint, to create large, intricate work with a sunken relief effect. One piece uses $11,ooo worth of currency sheets to create an over two-foot cube, into which a three dimensional skull is carved-out. More pics here!

Art Stage Singapore

"The Scene Stealers" Arts Exhibition by Monstore

Monstore's "The Scene Stealers" Arts Exhibition was held on the 15th of October until the 17th of October 2010. It was an exhibition dedicated to feature the amazing artworks ofthe talented Scene Stealers, in conjunction to launch the Monstore x The Trees and The Wild collaboration products. On the opening day, The Trees and The Wild performed an acoustic set of their favorite tracks, including an exclusive debut of their new soon to be released single as a token of the launch of the collaboration product which is available now online here.

Guests and attendees was offered an array of exquisite artworks to view by all the artists that is now united under the Scene Stealers community, which was established by Monstore as a forum and community for local and international artists both known and up and coming, to express themselves and collaborate creatively with Monstore. United under the Scene Stealers community are familiar names such as Stereoflow, Woyk, Araji, Danot, Monez and international artist such as Manuel Heischel and Balint Gelley, and also talented newcomers such as Ryan Tandya, Randy Rahardja, Varsam, and Lia.
