Interview: Natalie Wood

What is Insight's design philosophy?
I have worked in high-end fashion and in a more skate style capacity, so I have quite a broad range of experience… and I really love that. I guess I looked at the surf/skate market in Australia and wondered why it needed to be so bad! What I thought would be a good direction for Insight was to add a lot more styling and trends—make it fun and ultimately an easy-to-wear product, but never at the cost of looking good. This really is the philosophy—every piece can be worn to the beach or down the street.

(Insight's "Heroes of Xerox" spring '08 by Natalie Wood)

Describe the other labels you design, Something and Something Else.
Certain things that I was into style-wise didn’t really fit in the Insight collection so I started this new brand, Something, which is a bit more fashion forward and directional. I felt like this was an area of fashion that would be cool and fun to work in, push the ideas a little more, make it a bit edgier and older, and it really has such a fun quirky and unique image of its own now. Something Else is much closer to my true creativity. It’s definitely more fashion-forward and high-end with more luxurious fabrics and polished designs. It is where I get to truly express myself so much more.

Why have you chosen installations to showcase Something and Something Else?
For me, the catwalk is not really the right mode of expression. I love fashion, but I love even more creating a story and an art feel. I like to be able to take people into my world of creativity, and in fashion alone it is difficult to do this. The ‘doll house’ was something I dreamed of. I thought it would be amazing to build a life size one, have the models dress up, and create an amazing stage to show the fashion. It was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had created.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Oh, the inspiration comes from endless and unknown places. Nature is probably my biggest inspiration. It is so endless in its supply of fascinating and interesting things. Then, I love people watching and trying to get inside their heads about why they are doing or wearing things—kind of like anthropology I guess.

Would you say Australia's fashion-forward style is influenced more abroad or is it internal?
I think when you live in Australia you are always looking overseas. For me it all started because it always seemed so much more interesting and fantastic overseas. Now I think we need to acknowledge what is happening around the world—every place has it's own unique essence. There are some really amazing Australian labels doing incredibly unique fantastic things… It is such a great place to design from because you can lock yourself away from too many influences and really get inside your head. Let’s face it—we are a long long away from everything… so that isolation is an incredible bonus to developing a personal style.

Asos

Tips from catwalkqueen:
Many of this season's maxi dresses are full of fabric that balloons from under the bust down to the ground. This is great if you're tall and slim and can get away with the volume, but if you're quite curvy, all the added fabric can just make you look bigger than you are. The trick to making the look work? You could just add a wide belt, but I'd go all Kate Moss and add a waistcoat over the top. It smartens up a very boho style and keeps the dress in place. Pick a waistcoat that's cut low at the front (to show you're wearing a dress and not a skirt underneath) in a matching colour. Add wedge sandals for added lift (these dresses are loooong) and you're set!

Playlist: Natasha Khan

The enigmatically named Bat for Lashes, a.k.a. Natasha Khan, is a former nursery school teacher turned visual artist and songstress who hails from Pakistan by way of Brighton, England. A fey pixie with a penchant for feathers, face paint, and head scarves and a Björkian voice (the swan-dressed one is a fan, as are Thom Yorke and Devendra Banhart), Khan makes a specialty of dreaminess: The first song on her debut album, the Mercury Prize-nominated Fur and Gold, is about the singer being woken from her sleep by a horse who leads her to a magical land. She's casting her spell in New York tomorrow night at the Knitting Factory. Here, she shares a few of her favorite things—at least for now—with style.com

Tom Waits, Lonely
The Cure, A Forest
M.I.A., Galang
Prince, Sign o' the Times
Jermaine Stewart, We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (cheesy and genius!)
Cat Power, Wild Is the WindKids
The Velvet Underground, All Tomorrow's Parties
Devendra Banhart, Hey Mama Wolf
Lou Reed, Street Hassle
Björk, Pagan Poetry

Fergadelic

Fergus Purcell (a.k.a. Fergadelic) not only designs for Tonite, but has also created designs and logos for Silas, Hysteric Glamour and X-Girl Japan. His designs often combine the stoner aesthetics of prog rock and classic metal with a subversive sense of humour that seems straight from the pages of Robert Crumb and Viz comics. Fergadelic’s signature style is dictated by thematic elements – skulls, sci-fi, skate iconography, music-related graphics – but it isn’t dominated by just one technique. Often combining pen and ink drawings, hard edged vector graphics, photo –realist air brushing and collage.

Fergadelic is also a member of post-acid-house outfit 5 Mic Cluster (alongside esteemed techno producer Mark Broom), a roving participant in “prog-doom-disco collective” Chrome Hoof, and drummer/vocalist for The Changes, an “international art band” with BAPE designer SK8thing (a.k.a. Shin) and Australian design team Perks and Mini.

Debbie Harry

Debbie Harry is back, and just the way we like her: blonde. The new wave queen proved she's still got it at last night's Blondie show at the Manchester Apollo in Manchester, England. Rocking a new cropped 'do, white Wayfarers, red lips, and a black floral-print dress, Harry oozed the devil-may-care attitude that made her a downtown icon. Stay tuned for more—she's releasing her long-awaited solo album Necessary Evil in September.

T-shirt Song

JD Samson

Occupation: Musician (Le Tigre/Peaches). General lady about town
How did you come about this t-shirt? I've had it for years. Since i was a kid, and i still wear it
Why is it your favourite? Well i've had it for so long. i loved then, and i still love it now. Reminds me when i was little. And you know i am still kind of a kid inside
Favourite Song? (If you want it) Do it yourself by Gloria Gaynor. It is the disco track to wake you up in the morning. And sometimes i really need that

Cat Hartwell

Occupation: Daytime Hustler. Musician (Holy Hail)
How did you come about this t-shirt? Well, it actually belongs to my boyfriend who found it in a thrift store pile somewhere in Africa
Why is it your favourite? Aside from it being the softest shirt i've ever felt in my life, there's also the obvious; it's a fucking G'N'R shirt from Africa?! I remember the first time Justin let me wear it and keep it for a couple of weeks, and thinking, he loves this shirt, now that must be real trust, right?
Favourite Song? Snoop Dogg with Ain't No Fun

Tyler Pope

Occupation: Coffee drinker. Musician (!!!/LCD Soundsystem)
How did you come about this t-shirt? It is a friend of mines and as soon as i saw it i was obsessed. So i borrow it from her, when i need it
Why is it your favourite? I am a fan of Damien Hirst and i like skulls. Well anatomical skulls. It is kind a stoner right now...thinking about what is under our skin. I also like the title of the shirt, the illusive truth. It's just rad as a piece
Favourite Song? Popping My Collar by the boys from 36Mafia

Yoko Nono

Occupation: Writer. Musician (Apache Beat)
How did you come about this t-shirt? I stole it from a friend who stole it from her brother. He has had it since he was a skater punk back in the day
Why is it your favourite? It is an animal chin shirt and reminds me of being a little kid and my hilarious skating attempts, which rightly developed by the grave fear of breaking my teeth. I still have that fear
Favourite Song? If someone could get Thrill Of It All by Roxy Music out of my head, my life would be a little less dramatic, and a little more boring

James Iha

Occupation: Navy Seal. Musician (Smashing Pumpkins/ A Perfect Circle)
How did you come about this t-shirt? I bought this in Vegas, as a good luck shirt to wear before i went on a Navy Seal mission. My platoon exiled from our beach landing site at dawn and we were fired upon, luckily a gunship took them out with 20mm rounds. I thank this shirt
Why is it your favourite? I still have the blood of my foes on this decorated t-shirt and i moum the loss of all good people
Favourite Song? Bob Dylan's Knocking On Heaven's Door

irina

An update for fashionable music heads (or should that be musical fashion heads?): If you've been eagerly anticipating Irina Lazareanu's much-ballyhooed album with Sean Lennon, you're going to have to wait it out until at least October. She's in the studio right now laying down tracks, but the official word is there will be no talk of release dates until after the Spring 2008 fashion season winds down (which probably also puts to rest any rumors of an Irina sighting at the Glastonbury Festival later this month). In other words, she's focusing first and foremost on her modeling career, something we don't think any of her fans will complain about.

Playlist: Au Revoir Simone

With their three-keyboard sound, gossamer melodies, and girlishly detached delivery, Brooklyn's Au Revoir Simone gets our vote for pop group of the summer (we also like their complementary but never overly coordinated, vaguely retro outfits). As the trio—Heather D'Angelo, Erika Forster, and Annie Hart—is currently touring Japan and Europe, we asked the group for their top-ten travel songs. Here they are:

1. ABBA, Lay All Your Love on Me
2. Metronomy, Black Eye/Burnt Thumb
3. Air, Napalm Love
4. Peter Bjorn and John, Objects of My Affection
5. Lavender Diamond, You Broke My Heart
6. Camera Obscura, Razzle Dazzle Rose
7. Matt and Kim, Dash After Dash
8. Mates of State, All Day
9. Dirty on Purpose, No Radio
10. Liz Phair, Divorce Song
