Russian Circles: Station

Chicago’s Russian Circles have influenced a myriad of new instrumental acts along with the likes of Pelican, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, and Don Caballero. Station often embraces a quieter, more ethereal tone. Russian Circle’s debut album, Station marks one of the year’s finest aural installments and will undoubtedly capture a vast array of listeners.

Stockholm designer J. Lindeberg took progressive tailoring of basic menswear items and made them work as individual pieces. The Lindeberg man is made of confidence with a classic edge.

Gang Gang Dance

Brooklyn's brightest and hippest continue to embrace art-spattered. Gang Gang Dance are one of the bands, along with the likes of Animal Collective and Yeasayer, selected for true unequivocal praise. Their last full-length, 2005's God's Money, was hailed as an experimental album of real depth and wonder. Frontwoman Liz Bougatsos is an irrepressible, incandescent figurehead. The band seems to bristle and is constantly shooting off in new directions, shifting dramatically from something akin to a turbocharged, artfully mangled take on Europop, to a CAN-style groove.

Diana Orving is yet another great designer out of Sweden. With no formal design education, she has found her trademark in a draping-based construction technique and an experimental attitude to clothes and fashion, the method of creating directly on living bodies. She finds her inspiration in literature, art, theater and dance than in fashion itself. Improvisational is an understatement.

Maria Lau

UK-based designer, Maria Lau, creates handcrafted jewelery and fashion prop-accessories from an eclectic choice of materials - using simple hand techniques that become more complex through the process of making. Her collection inspired by tribal and African Masai jewelry. Blurring the boundary between jewelery and clothing, Maria Lau creates unconventional jewelery that results in a harmony between casual yet avant-garde and opulent.

The Rocker

Emma Stone, 19, played The Rocker, co-starring Office weirdo Rainn Wilson as a washed-up hair-band drummer on tour with his nephew’s high school rock band. Stone does the cool-chick thing again, playing bass in the band.

The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame.

Santogold

Santi White or best known by her stage name, Santogold, is challenging race stereotypes and playing fast and loose with genre, mashing up dub, punk, and electronics to make an energetic, anger-fuelled music that blurs the lines between the dancefloor and the moshpit. But it's not just skilful genre-skipping to recommend this record, though: White is the rare vocalist that can sound empowered and vulnerable within the space of the same song, and it's her force of character that places Santogold ahead of the pack.

For much of Santogold, White is channeling and recombining a series of indie icons: Debbie Harry, Kim Deal, Ari Up, Joe Strummer, and Karen O.

Inspired by films like Westside Story and The Outsiders, country singer Patsy Cline and 50's bombshell Jayne Mansfield, the long-awaited YMC'S women's collection also inherits a lot from the menswear line.
