Big Business
A few weeks back Big Business rocked out a bowling alley to celebrate the release of Here Comes The Waterworks and Ground Control Magazine were there to document things. You can check out some visual evidence from that evening that they put together by clicking here.
Zozobra
You may know him as the bassist of Boston’s rock outfit Cave-In, the or even as a contributor to the epic “art-metal” project Old Man Gloom. But Caleb Scofield is back, and he’s stepping into the spotlight for the first time, taking the helm and commanding his own new project, Zozobra.
What were your main motivations / inspirations behind the creation of Zozobra?
Caleb: I've had the idea of trying to do a record of my own songs for some time now, but it was hard to really dedicate time to it with Cave-In being so busy. It wasn't until after we finished touring on Perfect Pitch Black that I just kind of made myself set aside some studio time and really sit down and concentrate on making the idea become a reality.
It’s hard not to notice influence from your earlier projects, namely Cave In and Old Man Gloom, in Harmonic Tremors. In your mind, is Zozobra supposed to be a progression of either project or are you aiming to take this somewhere completely different?
I agree, the influences from my other musical endeavors are pretty obvious on this record. I hope as Zozobra progresses it will become more of it's own entity and less reliant on old formulas. It's still a new band though, there's still plenty of time to evolve.
Soon you’ll be heading out on your first tour with Zozobra, supporting ISIS and Jesu. Do you have any concerns about performing the material live for the first time? Has your need for fill-in members complicated your preparations?
Concerns? Yeah, I have concerns. I have fucking nightmares about it on a regular basis. I'm about to open for two of my favorite bands with Zozobra and we don't even really exist, at this point it's still a recording project. Adam and Jim from Clouds have agreed to help out though, and they're great. I know that they will be able settle some of my fears and bring an energy to the songs that doesn't exist on the record.
What do you see in the future for Zozobra? Is this just a one-time deal or can we expect to see more?
I definitely plan on continuing this. I would like to do some more minimal touring for this record and then try and record again as soon as possible. Also the idea of finding some other members that could be full time is something that is exciting to Santos and I. We'll see...

I'm Not A Plastic Bag
The British Government is encouraging the people in the UK to reduce the use of plastic bags from the supermarket in order helping the environment today. So, Anya Hindmarch released a bag which carries the message “I'm not a plastic bag” and gave the opportunity by making that bag available to the general public at a price that most could afford which is only £5. The bags sold out within hours of hitting the shop floor. In London, 90.000 bags has sold only in two hours. This bags become very popular since it had been spotted swinging from the shoulders of Keira Knightley and the Lilies (Cole and Allen). Then, as is now the case with highly-sought after fashion items, the £5 bags flooded eBay selling up to as much as £200, around the same price as a regular Hindmarch bag! What a clever way to help the environment.

Imitation Of Christ
Spearheaded by Tara Subkoff, an art school dropout who fell into acting under her own, the Imitation Of Christ creative collective are social engineers - collaboration that includes fashion design, art and film. Imititation Of Christ's motivating ideals can be summed up as "to make undesirables into desirables again", and this is apparent in their trademark recycling, re-construction and re-treatment of vintage clothing into relevant fashion statements.

BLAVE NEW WORLD
Blipsters (black hipsters) are all the rage in New York right now (new word for black fans of indie rock) the recent attention that has been given to several bands with black members — like Bloc Party, Lightspeed Champion, TV on the Radio and the Dears, but there's a new tribe of race-bending trendsetters taking over. Blipsters beware. Blavers (black ravers) OWN London's new/nu rave scene right now. East London, the epicentre of nu rave, is home to big black communities and so racial mixing was inevitable. Soon enough the neon-clad, glitter-faced, MDMA-fuelled parties became a melting pot of all creeds. Nu blave was born...
INTERVIEW - NIYI:
Your EP just landed on my desk. It's H-O-T.
Niyi: Cheers!!!!!!!
What inspires you?
I'm not sure if it's cartoons or porn. I know it's not very PC to say this, but I absolutely love obviousness and I love stereotypes even more. When I see a baddie on TV, I want him to be big, scary and have like massive frowny eyebrows. In my music I like to put massively obvious things that shouldn't be together, in the same song.
The nu rave scene is very mixed in terms of race and sexuality. Why do you think that is?
I think it is developing into something else. Maybe the Klaxons are the rave bit. I'd like to think of us as something a bit new.
Is it okay to describe black nu ravers as nu blavers?
Yeah. And the gays could be Quavers.
You're riding the crest of the nu blave wave. Is there anything you're pissed off about?
My friend Namalee! She won't give me my strawberry jumper back. It looks like a strawberry!!!
OK, well, good luck with that. Bye!
Bye.
